FAQs about Invisalign and dental conditions answered

It can be somewhat tedious when you are looking for a way to straighten your teeth as an adult, only to come up against hurdles for your desired treatment. If you are like most adult patients who want to straighten their smiles, you will want an aligner or brace that is visually discreet, but also realigns your teeth without hassle or extensive trips to the dentist.

When you come to the Dental Rooms, we will aim to provide such an aligner to you in the form of Invisalign Wimbledon. This almost invisible aligner fits seamlessly into the lives of most adults, and with it being highly customised, it can be used by almost any patient over the age of 18.

But you may have some questions if you are looking to have your teeth straightened following common or cosmetic dental procedures. Here, our team at the Dental Rooms answer frequent questions about using Invisalign Wimbledon with existing restoratives or cosmetic treatments.

Can I use invisible aligners if I have periodontal disease?

As a general rule, if our team suspects that you have the beginnings of periodontal disease, we will not press forward with Invisalign Wimbledon until it is resolved. Once it is resolved, we will aim to wait about 1 month before applying any brace or aligner to your teeth to ensure that your teeth are fully secured in your mouth.

This is because when you are undertaking moving your teeth with force (even minor amounts), it can cause your teeth to wobble somewhat. And if you have untreated periodontal disease, that wobbling can cause the tooth to fall out completely, thus making the entire orthodontic process pointless.

Can I wear invisible aligners if I have had a root canal?

Yes, you can!

Root canals do not impact the effectiveness of aligners or braces, and if you have more than 1 root canal, that is fine too.

However, if you have recently attended our surgery for a check-up and needed a root canal while also asking us about braces or aligners, we will wait between 1-2 months post root canal treatment to begin the procedure.

This is to ensure that the infection has completely healed and that any associated inflammation, nerve issues or damage to the pulp will be resolved too.

Can invisible aligners be used if you have veneers?

Once again, unless there are underlying issues with your gums (such as gum disease), our team should have no reservations about using invisible aligners with you if you have had veneers fitted.

In the unlikely event that your orthodontic treatment with your aligners causes one of your veneers to fall off, we will happily replace it for you!

Is it possible to use invisible aligners with dental implants?

This is where it can get a bit complicated!

As a dental implant is fixed in place, it is unwise to attempt to move it using any kind of orthodontic tool. However, if you are looking to straighten the teeth that are around the implanted tooth, we can aim to move the surrounding teeth without applying any pressure to the implant. This will help reduce discomfort, create the smile you want and keep your implant where it needs to be!
