A Complete Guide to Root Canal Treatment

“Does a root canal hurt?” is one of the most common questions patients ask when they are told they may need root canal treatment. The thought of having treatment inside a tooth can understandably cause anxiety. However, with modern techniques and effective local anaesthetic, root canal treatment should not be painful during the procedure.

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth. The soft tissue, known as the dental pulp, can become damaged because of deep decay, cracks, trauma or previous dental treatment.

Without treatment, an infected tooth may cause persistent toothache, sensitivity, swelling or an abscess. In some cases, the infection can continue to develop even when symptoms temporarily improve.

The purpose of root canal treatment is to remove the infection and preserve your natural tooth, rather than extracting it.

What happens during a root canal?

Before treatment begins, your tooth is carefully numbed with local anaesthetic. Your endodontist then creates a small opening in the tooth to access the root canal system.

The infected or inflamed tissue is removed, and the canals are carefully cleaned and disinfected. They are then shaped and sealed to help prevent bacteria from entering the tooth again.

Depending on the condition and structure of your tooth, treatment may be completed in one or more appointments.

Will my tooth hurt after a root canal?

Some patients experience mild tenderness or sensitivity for a few days after treatment. This is particularly possible when the tooth was already inflamed or infected before treatment.

Your dental professional will explain what to expect and provide appropriate root canal aftercare advice.

Why see an endodontist?

Every tooth is different. The number and shape of the roots, the anatomy of the canals, the severity of infection and whether the tooth has previously had root canal treatment can all affect the complexity of the procedure.

An endodontist is a dental specialist with additional training in diagnosing and treating problems involving the dental pulp and root canals. For complex cases, specialist assessment can help ensure that the most appropriate treatment approach is considered.
